Surface Area is a term that is usually used to describe the surface area of attack in terms of computer security.

In SQL Server, it refers to the number of SQL Server components and features that are enabled.

In SQL Server, some features are not enabled by default.

Examples:

  • clr enabled
  • cross db ownership chaining
  • Database Mail XPs
  • Ole Automation Procedures
  • scan for startup procs
  • xp_cmdshell
