Tip of the Week No.17 – Modern Servicing Model for SQL Server 2017 and Later

Tip of the Week #17

Starting with SQL Server 2017, the servicing model for SQL Server has changed. One of the major changes, is that Microsoft releases a series of Cumulative Updates (CUs) and Security Updates (GDRs) for SQL Server 2017 and later, instead of releasing Service Packs + Security Updates which was the case for SQL Server 2016 and earlier.

Based on the above, there are some considerations to keep in mind as a DBA:

• Cumulative updates, besides bug fixes and other patches, contain also security updates.
• In contrast to the above, security updates (GDRs) contain only specific SQL Server security patches and hotfixes.
• If you install SQL Server 2017 or later and then you directly apply a GDR, then you will be able to only install GDRs for the specific SQL Server instance onwards. So, you actually either chose the GDR or CU servicing train.
