CDNUG Event Review – May 22, 2013 – Windows / SQL Azure

Earlier this month, on the 22nd, another Cyprus .NET User Group event took place. The event featured two hourly topics dedicated to the Microsoft Cloud and its services. The first topic was on Windows Azure for Developers and the second on Windows Azure SQL Database, formerly SQL Azure. The event was also live streamed and thus open to anyone interested to attend.

The first session was delivered by Valentinos Georgiades (Twitter) who is the Developer and Platform Evangelist (DPE) Lead for Microsoft Cyprus and Malta. Valentinos started his session by introducing to us what exactly is the cloud, what are its provided services and derived benefits. Among other we talked about using Virtual Machines on the cloud, deploying and hosting Web sites, developing and deploying .NET applications and managing everything via the Windows Azure Platform Management Portal.

The second session was delivered by me where we talked about Windows Azure SQL Database (formerly SQL Azure). During my session we went through some of the main services provided by Windows Azure SQL Database. Also, we compared different features of SQL Database with SQL Server and performed many live demos showing how SQL Database can be used from SSMS and Visual Studio having the role of a data hub. Last but not least we saw how SQL Database can be managed via the Windows Azure Platform Management Portal.
